Mañío

It is found from Ñuble to Valdivia. The wood is a brilliant pink colour, with the sapwood of a paler pink, making the growth rings clearly visible. It is similar to the northern hemisphere pine tree wood. It is a semi-hard wood and lasts a long time in interiors.

Avellano

Avellano

The avellano (guivena avellano) is of European origin and was introduced into Chile in the 19th century. It grows from Valparaiso in the north to the Guaitecas Islands in the south. The wood is firm, light and elastic with a beautiful grain. Apart from the wood, which is used for building and handicrafts, it bears a flower which produces excellent honey, and a fruit which serves for human and animal consumption. It is often used as an ornamental tree in the cities.

Roble

Roble

Also known as Pellin, or Hualle in the case of younger trees. It is very common in the central valley of Chile down to Puerto Montt. The wood is an opaque reddish brown colour, with barely visible growth rings. When it is recently cut it may have chestnut to greenish tints resulting from surface oxidation. The wood is heavy and very durable.
